Let’s face it, travel costs money. Whether you’re a budget traveller backpacking across South America or love enjoying an all-inclusive beach holiday somewhere in the Caribbean, you’ll have to spend money.

You must’ve heard about different apps and websites offering you cashback when you buy something. Since we prioritise travel over pretty much everything else, we always thought that it would be amazing to earn money back from our travels. So, you can imagine just how happy we were when we first heard about WayAway and their WayAway Plus membership plan offering cashback on everything travel related from flights to rental cars and more. Since it’s a relatively new company, we couldn’t find a lot of reviews about it online. So, we figured one way to see if it’s any good was to test it out ourselves and share our thoughts with you.

Below you can read a bit more about WayAway, how to use it and what benefits you can get from joining their WayAway Plus membership. We definitely found it to be an incredibly useful tool to save as much as possible on our travel bookings.

How Does WayAway Work?

We learnt that WayAway is essentially a flight aggregator website – similar to Skyscanner – offering travellers the best deals on airline tickets and other deals. You can use it to compare and save money on flights regardless of whether you’re a Plus member or not.

Their search tool compares airfares offered by all major global airlines and agencies. With filters and price drop alerts, you’ll be able to find the best deals on specific travel dates as well as more affordable tickets on alternative dates. So we found that using WayAway isn’t any different or more complicated than searching on Skyscanner or Google Flights.

How Does the WayAway Plus Membership Work?

What makes WayAway stand out from other travel aggregators is their cashback system which you can access through their Plus membership plan. WayAway basically shares the commission it receives from airlines and travel agencies with its users in the form of cashback. So, you won’t be collecting miles or points that you might do with certain airline memberships. The money goes straight back into your account.

Note – It’s worth noting that your cashback will be paid in US dollars and you’ll need a PayPal account.

To start earning money back through WayAway you’ll first need to sign up for their Plus membership plan. This costs $US49.99 annually if you get the early-bird offer. It is normally $US99.99.

We know, this may sound like a lot to pay in advance. However, if you’re traveling regularly or booking an expensive family holiday you will 100% see a return on your investment and more over the course of the year. For example, with just two small hotel bookings in Turkey, we got $12 cashback. So, if you’re always booking your next trip or a more costly family holiday, then you’ll definitely see returns on that initial investment.

This is mainly because you can receive cashback on almost everything travel related. Yes, including your flights, accommodation, car rentals and even activities. In order to get cashback, you’ll need to log in to your WayAway Portal first. Then click on any of the well-known websites such as Booking.com and browse as you normally would. You’ll see exactly how much cashback you’ll be receiving when you get to the checkout.

  • Offset your Carbon Footprint. You are actually able to give part or all of your cashback to Sustainable Travel International. It is a project that helps to reduce the carbon footprint of even the most sustainable flights. What’s even better is that WayAway will actually double your contribution if you choose this option. We absolutely love this option!

Is WayAway Worth the Money?

We think WayAway is a great tool and the only travel aggregator currently out there to offer you cashback on all things travel. After only using it a number of times so far we can already say with confidence that if you travel a lot, or spend a lot of money on one or two big holidays per year, then a WayAway Plus membership plan will definitely benefit you.

One thing to be aware of is that you can’t currently get cashback on Airbnb bookings. So, if you like to stay in Airbnb’s more than hotels and hostels it might not be worth your money just yet. Although you can still benefit from the fantastic 6-8% cashback on GetYourGuide and Viator for your activities. Not to mention potential cashbacks on flights and car rentals.

Now, let your adventure begin,

Our Top Travel Resources

Accommodation: For hotels we always use Booking.com and Hostelworld for hostels. We also book longer stays on Airbnb or Vrbo.

Car Rentals: We use Discover Cars when we want to rent a car as it compares local, national and international companies.

Activities: If we book organised tours we always check either GetYourGuide or Viator.

Foreign Currency: Whenever we can we prefer to pay in local currency and for that we always use our Wise card. We can easily withdraw money from the ATM or pay by card at most shops and restaurants.
