Is the 6 Bridges Douro River Cruise in Porto Worth It?
In almost every “top things to do in Porto” guide we read before our visit, the 6 Bridges Douro River cruise was mentioned. It’s a popular activity for many reasons. First of all, Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia (or just Gaia) are the only two cities in Europe connected by 6 bridges. Each of these bridges is unique and observing them from the river affords you a different perspective on them.
The sound of cruising down the Douro River whilst admiring the view of Porto and the bridges was hard to resist, so we ended up booking a 6 bridges river cruise as well. In this guide, we’ll tell you more about what to expect from the experience, as well as give you our honest opinion on whether it’s actually worth the time and money.
If you’d like to see what we got up to in Porto, make sure to watch our dedicated Porto video which we’ve shared on our YouTube channel Kitti and Jon.

What is the 6 Bridges Douro River Cruise in Porto
The 6 Bridges Cruise is a leisurely river cruise along the Douro river that sails under the 6 beautiful bridges that connect Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. In this order, you’ll see:
- Dom LuÃs I Bridge – Porto’s most iconic bridge, designed by engineer Théophile Seyrig. It is a double-deck, metal arch bridge used by pedestrians and metro line D on the upper level and vehicles and pedestrians on the lower.
- Infante D. Henrique Bridge – It’s a modern road bridge that carries both vehicles and pedestrians. The bridge’s arch is actually one of the shallowest in the world.
- Maria Pia Bridge – This is the only bridge in Porto that was directly designed by Gustave Eiffel. It served as a railway bridge for 114 years. Today it’s a National Monument and is closed to the public.
- São João Bridge – This bridge was built to carry the railway traffic that Maria Pia Bridge couldn’t. Its design is different from the other arch bridges, with two of its pillars grounded in the riverbed.
- Freixo Bridge – Located further upstream, it’s part of Porto’s ring road, carrying the motorway traffic around the city. The bridge is actually a twin design, aka two identical bridges separated by a tiny gap, which is more suitable for the high volumes of traffic.
- Arrábida Bridge – It’s the closest bridge to the Atlantic Ocean. The bridge has a huge double arch and at the time of its completion it was the largest reinforced concrete arch in the world.

What to Expect from the 6 Bridges Cruise in Porto
Cruises depart from either Ribeira Pier in Porto, or Gaia Pier on the other side of the Dom LuÃs I Bridge. We went from the latter, but it doesn’t really matter where you set sail from.
The cruise was on a Rabelo-inspired boat, with motor engines and much more space compared to the traditional versions. The traditional Rabelo boats were used to transport barrels of Port Wine from the Douro Valley to the wine cellars in Gaia. You can see many of these traditional boats docked in front of the cellars along the river.
Once we were on the boat and seated, the cruise started by going upstream, passing first under the Dom LuÃs I Bridge. There was an audio guide that told us some basic information about the bridges, as well as other points of interest along the way. The audio was in multiple languages including Portuguese, Spanish, English and French.
After passing under Dom LuÃs I Bridge, we sailed towards Infante D. Henrique Bridge, Maria Pia Bridge, São João Bridge and Freixo Bridge, after which we turned around and sailed downstream towards Arrábida Bridge and the mouth of the Douro River. Then the boat turned around once again and sailed back to the original dock just in front of the Dom LuÃs I Bridge.

Top Tips for the 6 Bridges Cruise in Porto
Book online in the high season. As mentioned above, in the high season you may want to secure your spot online to avoid waiting around for the next available cruise.
Do the cruise on a nice day. If you really want to enjoy the river cruise, try to pick a nice, sunny day if you can. In the off or shoulder seasons the weather can be hit and miss, and you really want to avoid a cruise like this on a rainy or particularly windy day.
Have sun protection. The sun can be quite strong, so having sun cream as well as sunglasses will come in handy.
It’ll get a bit breezy. If you’re in Porto in the middle of summer, then the breeze will feel amazing. However, you may want a jumper or jacket if you’re here in the shoulder or off season. Also, watch your hat; you don’t want that to fly off your head into the river.
Bring some water. On a particularly hot day, don’t forget to bring some water with you.
Be there 10 minutes before departure. They start embarking about 10 minutes before departure. If you want to get a good seat near the side, make sure to be there on time.
Where to sit on the boat? Since the boat went up and down along the river it didn’t really matter which side we sat on. Just try to sit along either side for the most unobstructed views.

So, is the 6 Bridges Douro River Cruise in Porto Worth It?
Overall, we have no regrets about doing the 6 Bridges Cruise during our stay in Porto. Whilst the time on board went incredibly fast, it was a lovely way to see Porto and Gaia from a different perspective. It was also nice to appreciate the scale and engineering of the bridges from a different angle, as well as get some additional information about them.
We highly recommend picking a sunny day, so you can truly enjoy sailing up and down the Douro River. Otherwise, the experience may not be as pleasant (although they do have indoor seating). Lastly, unless you book a more immersive or private experience, don’t expect the 6 Bridges Cruise to be the best cruise of your life. After all, it’s a popular activity and, as with any popular activity, it can get extremely busy.

The bridges in Porto are stunning and great to see them from the
different perspective, I’m glad that I went to Douro Valley in Pinhao.
